Letter to Senator John McCain

May 5, 2018

Dear Senator McCain:

Though you never received my vote in any election when you were a candidate for office, and we have opposing views, you are given my vote as a person of substance and integrity, and as such I’m grateful for your heroism, grace, and willingness to work across the aisle, speak the truth even when your truth was different from what was popular, or mine, and as far as I can tell, you live fully into being an honorable human being, flaws and perfections alike.

Thank you, John McCain, not much more can be asked.

Godspeed,

Roger

  1. The following are snippets of comments received before the letter was posted: “He’s honest and true…refused to let the birther myth be perpetuated…made poor choices, Sarah Palin, but pray we gain more folks like McCain…we need some heroes…respected him as a Vietnam War hero and as a leader…share your sentiments…yes, I too will miss him. A man of character, so hard to find in Congress these days…we need more like him…My hope is a person of character can be found to fill his seat when the time comes…I have appreciates the man and his service and selflessness.”

    1. Is there a day when I’m not reminded of my flaws more than my strivings for some form of perfection? The subject line of the e-mail sent announcing this letter included a misplaced coma, and this after scrutinizing the whole piece. Though I’m not you, Senator McCain, I know you’ll appreciate my punctuation foible–thank you!
